After exploring Windows Vista for about six months on my test-bed PC, I decided two months ago that, along with upgrading the motherboard and CPU in my main work machine, I'd "upgrade" to Microsoft's latest operating system.
Vista's new navigation features had slowly grown on me, though I hadn't tried to work daily with the OS. Vista's appearance has it all over standard XP, and there are tons of usability features that beckon--after you turn off the incredibly annoying User Account Control that constantly bugs you when you want to install programs or tweak things.
For example, I love being able to shut down with one click; I like the junk filtering in Windows Mail (Vista's upgraded version of Outlook Express); and I appreciate the way I can easily drag User folders (formerly My Documents) to a new location so I can consolidate them with other data that I regularly back up. |

The skies opened yesterday morning across the UAE, making pedestrians scramble for shelter from the rain - and forecasters have warned there could be more wet weather today. Rain was recorded in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Fujairah, although meteorologists said in all cases the precipitation was not heavy. The duty forecaster at Dubai International Airport said an area of low pressure covering the country was responsible for the wet weather. "The depression seeded our atmosphere with cloud. We had this band of cloud cover over the UAE and that's why we had the showers," she said. |

Google negotiators this weekend continue to hammer out agreements with wireless carriers, handset makers, software developers, and hardware providers, as the company prepares to announce on Monday an ambitious platform for creating mobile applications.
Although Google has declined to comment for months on its rumored move into the mobile space, sources said the company will make an announcement Monday at 11 a.m. Eastern Time, and that details of the plan are being finalized this weekend.
AppDev Tools, Partners Poised Google will announce an open source development platform for mobile applications that will contain a full set of components, including an operating system, a set of common APIs, a middleware layer, a customizable user interface, and even a mobile browser, sources said. Instant messaging standard protocols will also be supported.
The platform is intended to simplify the process of creating and deploying mobile applications, so that an application can be built once and be compatible with multiple phones.
On the partner side, well over 30 industry heavyweights are already on board, including Intel, Qualcomm, Broadcom, Nvidia, Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile, China Mobile, Telefonica, NTT DoCoMo, LG Electronics, and HTC, the sources said.
With negotiations expected to continue through the weekend and into Monday morning, it's possible that the list could exceed 40 partners. Among those not supporting the announcement at press time are Nokia, Verizon and Apple. |

After spending most of Saturday criticizing Hillary and Bill Clinton, Barack Obama took the stage with two impersonators — Amy Poehler and Darrell Hammond — on "Saturday Night Live." The opening sketch of Saturday's broadcast featured Poehler and Hammond, as the Clintons, hosting a Halloween party. Toward the end of the sketch a man walked in wearing an Obama mask — which he removed to reveal he was, indeed, Obama. "I have nothing to hide," Obama said. "I enjoy being myself. I'm not going to change who I am just because it's Halloween." Campaigning in South Carolina earlier, Obama accused Hillary Clinton of giving voters "vague, calculated answers to suit the politics of the moment instead of clear, consistent principles about how you would lead America." And he subtly swiped at former President Bill Clinton by listing problems that "existed long before George Bush took office." Obama wrapped up his brief late-night comedy stint with the show's signature line: "Live from New York, it's Saturday Night." |
