South Korean display screen maker Samsung SDI Co (006400.KS) said on Thursday it had developed a 31-inch ultra-thin organic screen, raising the stakes in an accelerating worldwide race for organic displays.
Samsung SDI's announcement comes after Sony Corp (6758.T) began sales of 11-inch OLED TVs in November. The Japanese company has showcased a 27-inch prototype OLED TV in the past.
Flat screen makers are increasingly looking at active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AM-OLED) as a growth driver because they produce brighter images and use less power.
Samsung SDI officials declined to say when the company's 31-inch OLED screen would be mass-produced, saying the decision depended on TV set makers' plans. |

Nokia (NOK1V.HE) has again pushed back the launch of its gaming service N-gage due to delays in software testing, a spokesman said on Thursday, in the latest blow to the Internet services ambitions of the world's top cellphone maker. The gaming service, together with a music shop and mapping services, is one of the cornerstones of Nokia's drive into mobile Internet services under its new "Ovi" brand. Nokia has also pushed into next year expansion of its digital music store offering. Also Warner Music Group Corp (WMG.N) has been withholding content from Nokia's only store in Britain. At the same time it has signed up Vodafone (VOD.L), Telefonica (TEF.MC) and Telecom Italia (TLITn.MI) for Ovi. |

Apple Inc (AAPL.O) and News Corp.'s (NWSa.N) Twentieth Century Fox are set to announce a deal that will allow consumers to rent movies through Apple's digital iTunes Store, media reports said on Thursday. The agreement will allow rentals of Fox's latest DVD releases by downloading a copy from the online iTunes store for a limited time, the Financial Times said, quoting a source. The Wall Street Journal also reported the deal in its online edition. Representatives from both companies were not immediately available for comment. Video sales have lagged behind the growth in popularity of music downloads on iTunes. Media companies have wanted more flexibility from Apple in pricing policies. The durable goods orders for November and jobless claims for the week ended December 22 are due at 8:30 a.m. EST, followed by consumer confidence for December at 10:00 a.m. EST. Referring to the durable goods data, Italian bank UniCredit said U.S. core capital goods orders have been contracting over the past three months, "hinting that firms are increasingly careful in planning capital expenditures. We expect a partial rebound in November, even though momentum is generally fading." |

LUCKNOW, India - At least 21 endangered crocodile-like reptiles have died mysteriously in a river sanctuary in central India, raising fears that one of India's last unpolluted waterways has become toxic. Wildlife officials discovered the bodies of one male and 20 female gharials — massive reptiles that look like their crocodile relatives, but with long slender snouts — in the Chambal River over the last three days, Sri Kishna, a government official in Uttar Pradesh state, said Wednesday. The deaths have concerned conservationists, who believe there are only some 1,500 gharials left in the wild, many of them in a sanctuary based along the Chambal, one of the few unpolluted Indian rivers. "The deaths of such a large number of gharials is not common. There has to be something wrong with the river water," said state Chief Wildlife Warden D.N.S. Suman. |

Oil prices traded within a thin range around $90 a barrel Wednesday, ahead of a weekly report on U.S. inventories that is expected to show that crude oil and petroleum product stockpiles rose.
Light, sweet crude for January delivery fell 7 cents to $89.95 a barrel in electronic trading on the Nymex by midday in Europe. The contract had risen $2.16 to settle at $90.02 a barrel Tuesday.
In London, January Brent crude rose 5 cents to $90.04 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.
"The market will be looking for confirmation that the crude oil stocks draws of last week were only due to fog delays and is pricing a rebound in crude stocks in the DOE report," said Olivier Jakob of Switzerland's Petromatrix.
The average forecast of analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires was for the U.S. Energy Department's Energy Information Administration report to show that crude supplies grew by 100,000 barrels.

After exploring Windows Vista for about six months on my test-bed PC, I decided two months ago that, along with upgrading the motherboard and CPU in my main work machine, I'd "upgrade" to Microsoft's latest operating system.
Vista's new navigation features had slowly grown on me, though I hadn't tried to work daily with the OS. Vista's appearance has it all over standard XP, and there are tons of usability features that beckon--after you turn off the incredibly annoying User Account Control that constantly bugs you when you want to install programs or tweak things.
For example, I love being able to shut down with one click; I like the junk filtering in Windows Mail (Vista's upgraded version of Outlook Express); and I appreciate the way I can easily drag User folders (formerly My Documents) to a new location so I can consolidate them with other data that I regularly back up. |
